Cauliflower and Curry Potato

4 cups potatoes, peeled and quartered
1 small cauliflower, cut into florets
a pinch of asafetida*
3/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
3/4 teaspoon salt
pinch of sugar or sweetener
2 tomatoes, chopped
1 1/4 cups water
1/2 teaspoon garam masala**
1/2 cup wheat berries, optional

Add all ingredients to a crockpot and cook on low for approximately six hours. If you're adding wheat berries, cook them on high with an additional cup of water for an hour, then add remaining ingredients and cook on low. With the wheat berries, if things start drying out, add more water.

**garam masala = Indian sweet spice mix = sweet spice mix Notes: You can buy this either whole or ground. Durban is a well regarded brand. To make your own: 2 parts ground cardamom + 5 parts ground coriander + 4 parts ground cumin + 2 parts ground black pepper + 1 part ground cloves + 1 part ground cinnamon + 1 part ground nutmeg. Substitutes: equal parts cumin, pepper, cloves and nutmeg, all ground or curry powder; spicier, different flavor.
